Based on Nashiki Kaho's award-winning children's novel, The Witch of the West is Dead is another outstanding work from acclaimed filmmaker Nagasaki Shunichi, the director of Kuro-obi, Heart, Beating in the Dark, and Christmas in August. The subtly moving film flips gently through pastoral pastimes, adolescent insecurities, and coming-of-age rites to portray one unforgettable summer for a young girl and her grandmother. Raised in Japan and fluent in Japanese, veteran American actress Sachi Parker appears in her first Japanese film as the witchly grandmother who quietly guides her granddaughter, played by newcomer Takahashi Mayu. Ryo (Canary, Casshern) completes the multi-generation triangle as the mother.
